The Gathering is an annual event bringing together promoters from across the Highlands and Islands with performers, producers, funders and other creative professionals, to network, build key skills and showcase new work.

The Gathering programme includes thought-provoking discussions, brainstorming sessions, showcase performances and pitches, and most importantly, plenty of time to network. The theme of the 2017 Gathering is Sustainability.

GET IN – Where is it getting us?

Now that we’re almost at the end of the first year of GET IN, this is a chance to hear how it is going from the Youth Promoters themselves. Find out what they’ve achieved, what the challenges have been, and what’s next for the project.


Stand Up for Sustainability

Novelist, playwright & performer, Alan Bissett, takes the floor for something that resembles part stand up, part monologue, and part heated debate, focussed on the question: Just how sustainable is rural touring?

Evening Performance:

Guide Gods by Claire Cunningham

Using dance, live music, humour and interviews with religious leaders, academics and deaf and disabled people, acclaimed performer Claire Cunningham goes on a perilous quest to explore how the major world faiths view deafness and disability in this witty and illuminating show.

The day will feature short showcase performances from a variety of acts, including Gunshow Theatre, Mary Ann Kennedy & Finlay Wells, Indepen-dance, Young Trad Musician of the Year nominee Iona Fyfe, Right Lines Productions and more.

Spend the afternoon networking with showcase performers, promoters, and other organisations such as Regional Screen Scotland, Luminate, Play Pieces, and Theatre in Schools Scotland, to join the dots and make things happen. The Touring Network team will be on hand to provide advice and guidance too.

Survivors Day

Sat 11 Mar, 10am-1pm


Widening Access for Neurodiverse Audiences

A practical hands on workshop, led by Ellie Griffiths from the Upfront Performance Network, to spark ideas and develop action plans to build neurodiverse audiences in positive and creative ways.


Final Thoughts

As the Gathering draws to a close for another year, this final session will allow some time to reflect on the activities and outcomes of the past few days, before everyone heads home.

Boat of Garten is in the Cairngorms National Park, just 6 miles north-east of Aviemore, between the B970 and the A95. Approximate drive times to the village are as follows:

The 2017 Gathering will take place in the lovely village of Boat of Garten, set amongst heather clad hills and native woodland in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park.


Boat of Garten Community Hall

The main venue for the Gathering, Boat of Garten Community Hall will be celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2017 and is nestled beside woodland, just a short walk from the centre of the village and views of the Cairngorms. The hall is fully accessible for disabled visitors and has a number of flexible spaces, making it ideal for the event.


As well as The Boat Hotel, there are a number of B&B’s and self catering options in and around Boat of Garten, including Docharn Lodge Guest House and Heath Cottage, which we have provisionally booked for attendees.

During the registration process, you will be given the option to request overnight accommodation – we will then be in touch to confirm your requirements and request additional payment.

The cost is likely to be in the region of £35-45 per person per night, although there may be an additional supplement for single-occupancy rooms.
