The Touring Network Presents

The Gathering

Thu 9 – Sat 11 March 2017   |   Boat of Garten, Cairngorms

The Gathering is an annual event bringing together promoters from across the Highlands and Islands with performers, producers, funders and other creative professionals, to network, build key skills and showcase new work.

 Programme 2017

The Gathering programme includes thought-provoking discussions, brainstorming sessions, showcase performances and pitches, and most importantly, plenty of time to network. The theme of the 2017 Gathering is Sustainability.

Promoters-only Day

Thu 9 Mar from Noon

Presentation & Discussion:

GET IN – Where is it getting us?

Now that we’re almost at the end of the first year of GET IN, this is a chance to hear how it is going from the Youth Promoters themselves. Find out what they’ve achieved, what the challenges have been, and what’s next for the project.

Discussion:

Stand Up for Sustainability

Novelist, playwright & performer, Alan Bissett, takes the floor for something that resembles part stand up, part monologue, and part heated debate, focussed on the question: Just how sustainable is rural touring?

Evening Performance:

Guide Gods by Claire Cunningham

Using dance, live music, humour and interviews with religious leaders, academics and deaf and disabled people, acclaimed performer Claire Cunningham goes on a perilous quest to explore how the major world faiths view deafness and disability in this witty and illuminating show.

Showcase Day

Fri 10 Mar from 10am

Pitch Performances:

A selection of excerpts from tour-ready performers

The day will feature short showcase performances from a variety of acts, including Gunshow Theatre, Mary Ann Kennedy & Finlay Wells, Indepen-dance, Young Trad Musician of the Year nominee Iona Fyfe, Right Lines Productions and more.

Promoter & Performer Contact Time:

Connect with each other and pencil dates

Spend the afternoon networking with showcase performers, promoters, and other organisations such as Regional Screen Scotland, Luminate, Play Pieces, and Theatre in Schools Scotland, to join the dots and make things happen. The Touring Network team will be on hand to provide advice and guidance too.

GET IN Tour Launch Party:

Kathryn Joseph plus support

Join us as we toast the opening night of Kathryn Joseph’s Highlands & Islands tour, programmed by the GET IN Youth Promoters.

Survivors Day

Sat 11 Mar, 10am-1pm

Workshop:

Widening Access for Neurodiverse Audiences

A practical hands on workshop, led by Ellie Griffiths from the Upfront Performance Network, to spark ideas and develop action plans to build neurodiverse audiences in positive and creative ways.

Discussion:

Final Thoughts

As the Gathering draws to a close for another year, this final session will allow some time to reflect on the activities and outcomes of the past few days, before everyone heads home.

Reasons to Attend

v

Networking

The Gathering is a rare opportunity for promoters from across the Highlands & Islands and other rural areas around Scotland, to meet face to face, to network with performers, producers, funders and other creative professionals, and share ideas.

Pick each others brains, make new friends, and find out what’s going on across the Highlands.

Showcasing

For performers, the Gathering provides a platform to showcase new work. Perform an excerpt of your show and build relationships with rural promoters.

70% of the performers who showcased at the 2016 Gathering have gone on to tour to Touring Network venues.

Discussions

Learn from each other in our interactive discussions and brainstorming sessions.

This year, the theme of the Gathering is Sustainability, so you can expect to discuss issues of promoter succession, programming on a tight budget, the impact of rural touring on the environment, and much more.

What people said 2016

“What was most valuable was the opportunity to introduce our new committee members to the Touring Network and show them that they are not working in a volunteer capacity in isolation and to give them inspiration – which is what the Spring Gathering gave them in bucket loads!”

Promoter

“The Gathering was a well run networking event with the opportunity to properly connect with a group of people who all work in the arts.

Not just to pitch and walk away, but actually connect.”

Performer

“We had a brilliant time playing for everyone and are so grateful to be asked along. We found it a very valuable experience as we’ve already been booked by a few promoters and venues… And the food was brilliant!
