Indigenous People – Kakatsitsi and Mbilou
12 September, 2019 @ 7:30 pm
£10We have an amazing performance to look forward to in Gairloch Community Hall on Thursday 12th September at 7.30pm with Mbilou, a Bwiti Nganga (healer, dancer, musician and ceremony leader) from Gabon and KaKatsitsi – a group of traditional drummers, dancers and singers from the Ga tribe of Southern Ghana. Their music, rooted in the fishing community of Jamestown, Accra, takes traditional rhythms and chants from their own Ga tradition and those of a variety of other West African cultures, rearranging them in a modern and accessible way, combining traditional drumming grooves played on a wide variety of West African drums with melodies from bamboo flutes, xylophone and traditional chants sung in six part harmony. This concert has been arranged through ‘Indigenous People’ – an arts education charity specialising in tour and project management for traditional world music and dance groups, particularly from Africa. Based in Brighton, Indigenous People specialises in educational projects to promote a greater sense of well-being generated by participation in community based arts activities such as traditional drumming, dance and singing. The charity also seeks to preserve endangered traditional cultures by providing employment for traditional musicians and artists and raising awareness of the economic value of traditional culture in promoting development in impoverished communities in developing countries.
