The Centre for Rural Creativity at the University of the Highlands and Islands, in partnership with Who Cares? Scotland, invites visual artists to submit a proposal for a 2 week residency in Shetland in July 2019, working with a group of care experienced young people to explore the theme of Home and Belonging. Any form of visual art is welcome, but artists should have experience of creatively engaging with young people in imaginative and sensitive ways.

The artist will be resident in Shetland for 2 weeks, which will include workshops or participatory activities and a 2 night residential for up to 14 young people. The artist will be supported by a Who Cares? Scotland engagement officer during their time with the young people. The aim of the artist’s residency is to provide young people with space to creatively explore ‘home’ in relation to self and senses: what does it take to makes us feel at home, or that we belong?

The residency is part of a new 3 year research project called Home and Belonging, funded by the Life Changes Trust with funding provided by the National Lottery Community Fund, and led by the University of the Highlands and Islands in partnership with Who Cares? Scotland. Proposals will be shortlisted by Siún Carden and Roxane Permar (UHI) and Sian Wild (Who Cares? Scotland).
